Our Top Tips for Taking your Pizza Oven Camping

Ahh, the great British summertime… a time for picnics in the park, the soothing sound of your neighbours mowing the lawn, a 99 ice-cream, and of course the annual camping trip (which hopefully won’t be a damp affair!). We always seem to get that one good week of sun, but this year let’s hope it lasts a little longer, or at least long enough to get your pizza game in good shape ready to impress your mates when the tent finally does make an appearance.

In our opinion, one of the best things about being the proud owner of a portable pizza oven, such as the Igneus Minimo or Igneus Bambino, is having the ability to pack it up in the car and take it with your wherever you head off to this summer.

We know for many of you that will be to a lovely campsite somewhere in the UK, but fear not, gone are the days of cranking open a can of baked beans, opening a packet of instant noodles, or God forbid, prizing open a jar of sandwich spread! So, with that in mind we wanted to share our tip tips for taking your pizza oven on your next camping holiday. Let’s dive in!

1. Prepare Dough in Advance

One of the benefits of pizza dough is it can be prepared well in advance of when you need it, and even frozen, meaning you don’t have to faff around making fresh pizza dough in your tent, which let’s face it would be an absolute nightmare.

Of course, fresh dough is best, but if you think buying pre-prepared dough would be easier for your camping holiday, you can buy our Sourdough Balls here!

2. Keep your Pizza Sauce Simple!

Many people think they’ve got to put about 15 ingredients in their pizza sauce. It’s simply not the case. In fact, the best tomato sauce literally has these six ingredients, which can easily be prepared on the campsite or in advance of the trip and stored in an airtight container.

  • 2x 400g Tins San Marzano DOP Plum Tomatoes
  • 6 tbsp Good Quality Extra Virgin Olive Oil
  • 1-2 tsp Oregano (Fresh if you can get it, dried if you can’t)
  • 3-4 leaves Fresh Basil (torn)
  • 1 tsp Kosher Salt

Bonus Tip: Don’t forget a spoon to put the tomato sauce on your pizza!

3. Plan Your Toppings & Ingredients

If you’re meeting up with friends and family on your camping trip, it might be tempting to try and please everyone with a vast array of toppings. However, we recommend sticking to the old favourites, and ones the travel the best. Opt for toppings and ingredients that are easy to store, have a longer shelf life, and require minimal preparation while camping.

Also, pre-slice or pre-cook toppings such as vegetables or meats. Another top tip is to have everyone bring their own toppings. Not only does this save you a few headaches, it also saves you money!

As for the cheese, using grated mozzarella rather than mozzarella balls might not be something we’d normally advocate, but when camping with your pizza oven it’s something that can be a little less messy and less hassle to use.

4. Pack the Essential Pizza Accessories

Here at Igneus, we love an accessory to take your pizza game to the next level. However, its important to only pack the essentials that are going to help you whilst you’re away. The five accessories we think are ‘must haves’ for your camping trip are; a pizza oven cover, which for the Igneus Minimo also doubles up as a carry case, standard launching peel, heat resistant gloves, Babadoh containers (to keep your toppings in), and an Igneus pizza rocker cutter.

5. Take Just Enough Fuel

Let’s face it, who wants to be packing the car with a load of hardwood, especially if there’s no guarantee it will all get used! We recommend preplanning how often you intend to use your pizza oven whilst you’re away, and then work back from there and take the amount of wood you’ll need, plus 1 extra log just in case!

Another important thing to remember is to chop down larger logs to the correct size for your pizza oven before you leave home.

6. Check Campsite Rules

The last thing you want is to rock up at the campsite with your pizza oven and all the prepared ingredients, only to find the site doesn’t allow you to use it! Although this would be pretty rare, considering most sites allow campfires, it’s always best to double check to avoid disappointment.

Finally, remember to enjoy it! Camping with friends and family is a great experience and taking your Igneus Pizza Oven should only elevate that. By keeping it simple and sticking to
